The lesson involved a lot of shouting and tension, making it difficult to enjoy the experience and learn. I would have preferred honesty if she wasn't interested in teaching that day (or for whatever reason), as there 10s of schools nearby where I could've gone instead.
What concerned me most was witnessing her speak in a condescending / patronizing manner to other instructors the following day after which I did not return. This was particularly disheartening because the other instructors I interacted with were very kind and friendly. As she appears to be in a management position, this treatment of staff seemed inappropriate and created an uncomfortable atmosphere.
I worry the instructors may not feel comfortable speaking up due to job security concerns . While the location and other staff were great, the negative teaching approach and workplace dynamics would make me hesitant to return or recommend this school.
We hired mostly duotone gear which was all in good order and if we weren’t enjoying a kite/wrong size for conditions we quickly swapped. We took beginner and advanced lessons which in English and the instructors were great. When hiring or for lessons depending on conditions they will take you to the lagoon if it’s offshore. Wind was very consistent we kites every day we were there in 25 knot winds.
I would highly recommend anyone considering a trip to Mayapo see the team at kite addiction for hire or lessons or for a beer after a session.
The school is IKO affiliated (one of the reasons I chose it) and is right on the beach. Their equipment is in good condition and in some cases, brand new. If the wind is on-shore or at least across the shore, it's a wonderful experience kitesurfing at sunset in the warm Caribbean sea. If the wind isn't on-shore, there's a lagoon a few minutes away which eliminates the possibility of being blown out to sea.
Martin, the school owner, is a highly qualified instructor and has a wonderful team of other instructors to back him up, over whom, he keeps close watch. All are very encouraging, even if Martin himself is demanding of his students - or at least of me - a good thing!
Be aware, that the school is somewhat isolated - it's forty minutes or so by car to Riohacha to banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and medical services. This wasn't a problem for me, as I enjoyed the tranquility - twice, for a month each - to kitesurf, run on the beach in the morning and improve my Spanish.
They always accompany you and make you feel safe throughout the learning process.
I will definitely return.
