The Only Mayapo Kite Trip Packing List You’ll Ever Need 🌵

Think you’ve packed everything? Think again. These 10 Mayapo-specific tips will save your kite session (and your skin!) when the desert wind kicks in 💨.

🧳 1. Kite & Gear Essentials

If you’re taking lessons with us, we provide all kite equipment — but if you’re bringing your own, here’s what works best in Mayapo:

  • Kites: 7m–12m are ideal. Most days average 18–25 knots, so smaller sizes get plenty of use.
  • Twin-tip board (or foil board if you’re into lightwind sessions).
  • Harness & wetsuit: You’ll only need a shorty or lycra for sun protection — the water is warm all year.
  • Repair kit & pump: Always good to have your own.
  • Helmet, impact vest & booties if you’re a beginner or like extra protection on shallow spots.

💡 Tip: Our school offers safe storage and fresh-water gear rinsing — travel light if you prefer!

☀️ 2. Clothing for Desert + Wind

Mayapo sits between the Caribbean Sea and La Guajira desert — hot, dry, and windy.

  • Light, breathable clothes (cotton or linen).
  • Long-sleeve UV shirts for sun protection.
  • Boardshorts, bikinis & rashguards.
  • Windbreaker or hoodie for cool evenings.
  • Hat, sunglasses, buff/scarf — desert wind + sun can be intense.
  • Flip-flops or sandals, plus closed shoes if you plan to visit Cabo de la Vela or desert dunes.

💡 Local insight: White sand gets hot — always have something on your feet during midday hours!

🧴 3. Sun & Skin Protection

The sun in La Guajira is no joke. Bring:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+) you can by it in our Kite Shop
  • Zinc for face/lips
  • Aloe vera gel for after-sun care
  • Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated

♻️ Travel tip: Please avoid single-use plastics — the desert ecosystem is fragile.

📸 4. Tech & Accessories

  • Headlamp or flashlight (for evening walks on the beach)
  • Waterproof phone pouch or dry bag
  • GoPro / Action cam (the colors here are unreal)
  • Power bank & universal adapter

🏕️ 5. For a Real Local Experience

If you’re staying a few days beyond your lessons, consider bringing:

  • Spanish phrasebook — locals love it when visitors learn a few words of Wayuunaiki or Spanish.
  • Cash (COP) — there are no ATMs in Mayapo.
  • Reusable coffee cup / travel mug
  • Small first-aid kit (band-aids, electrolytes, mosquito spray).

🌅 6. Optional — for Extra Comfort

  • Beach towel / quick-dry towel
  • Water & snacks — the next shop is 5 km away, so it’s best to come prepared.
  • Earplugs if you’re a light sleeper
  • Book or Kindle for chill afternoons
